Format of a typical Cafe

The doors to the Cafe open at 19:30 (7:30pm) every Tuesday evening during term time. We have free time from 19:30 until 20:00 when you can play the various games and activities available or catch up with friends. At around 20:00 we will introduce the event for the evening and then most weeks have a talk on a particular culture or aspect of British culture and enjoy a free meal together. At around 21:30 people some people like to go back to the games and activities while others prefer to continue enjoying talking with friends. At 21:30, as of October 2010, there will also be the opportunity to attend a series of interactive presentations explaining what Christians believe which is an optional activity. The Cafe closes at 22:30.

Here is a breakdown of the typical evening:

  • 19:30 Doors open.
  • 20:00 Introduction to event.
  • 20:15-21:30 Meal and talk.
  • 21:30-22:30 Free time including option to explore the Christian faith.

Weekly Activities

From 19:30 until 20:00 and again from 21:30 until 22:30 most weeks, Pool, table football and table tennis will be available at the Cafe. Pool and table football are located in the downstairs basement games room while table tennis can be found in the foyer. As table tennis is often very popular, we try to play games that will involve as many people as possible at busy times during the evening.

 Other Hightlights

The biggest events of the Cafe calendar are undoubtedly the meals and talks at Christmas and Easter and our Chinese New Year event. We usually have around 100 international students along to the Christmas meal and talk and to enjoy a very filling two course traditional Christmas meal while listening to an interesting talk on the real meaning of Christmas. Our Chinese New Year event is often very popular with traditional Chinese food available, a talk on Chinese culture and a chance to try your hand at Chinese caligraphy. The Easter event explores what makes Easter a special occasion for Christians and seeks to explain some of the customs that British people do at Easter time. Here are some images.
